Stanadyne’s New Self-Cleaning EGR Valve Tackles The Tough Carbon Buildup Problem

Self Cleaning EGRSouthfield, Michigan – May 11, 2022 – Stanadyne, a leading global fuel and air management systems supplier, has developed a modular, scalable exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve with a patent-pending self-cleaning function to mitigate carbon buildup that can cause sticking and eventual valve failure. The unique design uses an in-line controller to improve the reliability of electronic components in high-temperature environments and offers enhanced engine controller interface flexibility.

“Exhaust gas recirculation is a powerful tool to reduce internal combustion engine nitrogen oxide emissions, especially for diesels,” said Stanadyne Chief Technology Officer Dr. Brad Stroia. “The unique Stanadyne valve design overcomes typical failure modes due to fouling and excessive heat and vibration to significantly lower warranty costs resulting from stuck valves.”

EGR systems typically use a butterfly and poppet valve mechanism with a round exhaust gas opening.

“The Stanadyne solution allows the inlet port to take a variety of shapes and modulate the exhaust gas flow with greater accuracy for improved fuel efficiency,” said Stanadyne Senior Engineering Manager Nicola Fachechi. “In addition to increased efficiency, our EGR valve is fully customizable.”

The Self-Cleaning EGR Valve is a modular design features engine Interface components that can be changed without affecting the core mechanism to accelerate customer application development. An optional cooling system addresses both hot and cold side engine installations.
